Not only is Chinese British Gemma Chan the only female actor in the London production of Harold Pinter’s cryptic play, The Homecoming, she is also the only Asian. The 1967 play revolves around a family of men during the homecoming of Teddy who has returned from America with his wife. Chan plays Ruth, Teddy’s wife, the enigmatic and ambiguous female presence who stirs up the sexual desires and longings for femininity in the family.
Born and bred in London, Chan is a daughter of Hong Kong immigrants. She started off her career as one of the models on UK’s Project Catwalk before going on to guest-star in British hits like Doctor Who and Sherlock. Chan is currently playing the servant humanoid on the popular British sci-fi show The Humans.
